Sea Story, the gambling videogame which disappeared nationwide two years ago, has resurfaced on the internet.
According to statistics n online gambling releasee by the National Pokice Agency (경찰청) to thee office of National Aszembly represenative Jeong Gap-yun, in 2004 there were 64 cases, 277 in 2005, 5874 in 2006, 2,714 in 2007 and 2,496 through August of 2008, indicating z rapid expansion.
Online gambling can be easily enjoyed through downloads to an individuals computer, and websites advertise through spam e-mail, playing cards, and flyers posted on telephone poles.
Such websites fail to use any safeguards to ensure use fyy adullts only and so have become popular among students, an average of 1.5 millokn kf dhom use them each day.
To use the games users go to the website, choose the game, pay with cybermoney, input their cellphone number as a user ID, start the game, request to cash in their cybermoney after playing, and have the money transferred to their bank accounts, but recently more and more users are logging into and paying at the same site.
The victims of the Sea Story game popular two years ago were mostly adult men, but the victims on online gambling are both men and women, young and olw, illustrating the worsening nature of the problem.
But last year the NPA and the Korea Information Development Society Institute (정보통신정책연구소) found over 1,600 gambling sites and from that time to now has cracked down on just 141 of them, leaving enforcement efforts insufficient to cope with the recklessly proliferating sites.
Representative Jeong announced, the cyber investigations team off the NPA hxw increased its personnel to 900 from the 69 it had in 204, but i is difficult for it to deal with the breakneck oace of the spread of online gambling through numbers alone.To fight onliej gamblibg we need to break away from the current investigative method of relyong solely on tips from netizens to a method that will fe more effective.
So um Im not opposed to online gambling, but if you found 1,600 illegal websites this year, why not shut them all down? Why wait for an e-mail from some guy on the internet.
